5 tips on how to best maintain your beautiful keratin hair treatment at home

5 tips on how to best maintain your beautiful keratin hair treatment at home

1. Don’t wash your keratin treatment immediately when you get home.

It is important to wait at least three days after your treatment at the salon before washing your hair for the first time.

Your sulphur bonds are rearranged in the hair in a new way, so your hair is now straighter and frizz-free.

These sulphur bridges need some time to harden, which takes up to 72 hours.

After those three days, you can wash your hair more often again.

But always use the right products, as they contain the same ingredients as the keratin treatment.

If you choose not to do this, unfortunately we cannot give a long-term guarantee on the keratin hair treatment.

2. Always wash your hair with a Nanokeratin shampoo.

Nanokeratin shampoos contain the same ingredients you just had your keratin treatment with. They ensure that you enjoy the treatment for a long time and provide gentle and effective cleansing of the hair and scalp. They refresh the hair and scalp without affecting the natural pH values. And detangle and reduce friction between hair strands for greater freedom of movement and combability.

Use: wash thoroughly two times with this shampoo. If you find the first time shampoo doesn’t foam enough, you can pre-wash with Olaplex shampoo the first time.

3. Always use a Nanokeratin hair mask after shampooing.

Nanokeratin Hair Masks imitate the hair’s natural repair process, restoring hair from the inside out. It forms a solid inner layer to seal natural nutrients into the hair fibre, providing better nourishment from the root, so the hair repairs itself from the inside out. It also forms an outer layer to insulate the hair fibre from harmful environmental sources such as humidity, salt water and UV rays. Reduces friction between hair strands for greater freedom of movement.

Use: Apply to towel-dried hair for eight minutes, then rinse well.

4. Always use this heat protector after shampooing.

Reinvent Insulator

This leave-in product for all hair types insulates the hair fibre from damaging external factors such as moisture, salt water, heat and UV radiation and restores its elasticity. The Insulator has a light straightening effect, due to heat sources such as the sun, hairdryer or straightener. Speeds up drying time and improves hair’s shine. Detangles hair and reduces friction between hair strands for greater freedom of movement.

Use: Apply to towel-dried hair, comb through well and style as desired.

5. Treat your hair once a week with a texture restorer.

It is a good idea to use a texture restorer once a week on unwashed hair the night before you wash your hair.

Olaplex ensures that new sulphur bridge bonds are created in the hair again, keeping your hair strong and resilient from within.

Many hairdressing treatments, as well as the hairdryer, straightening iron and sun damage the quality of sulphur bonds in the hair.

As a result, your hair becomes weaker and more brittle and the ends become very brittle.

Olaplex hair perfector prevents this!

Use: Apply Olaplex hair perfector into unwashed hair and leave on for several hours, or preferably overnight.

Then rinse your hair well in the shower and wash and care for it as described in this step-by-step plan.

The nano Smooth pure Home Care range extends the result of the in-salon Keratin treatment, as they contain the same ingredients as the Keratin hair treatment.

With the Olaplex hair perfector, you are guaranteed to keep strong and beautiful hair!

We therefore only guarantee the treatment if you also use these associated products at home!

What is a keratin hair treatment?

What is a keratin hair treatment?

A keratin hair treatment is a treatment that changes the internal structure of frizzy, curly and damaged hair. After the treatment your hair will be smoother, shinier and more manageable!

So can you change your hair structure?

Yes, it is possible to change the structure of your hair. But you can only change the structure of the hair visible above your skin’s surface. Practical examples are a perm treatment, curling with a curling iron or straightening with a straightener.

You cannot get under your skin and change the disposition of your hair structure. Your hair will always grow out of your hair follicle with the same original structure.

To change your hair structure, you need to rearrange the connections of keratin chains. While you have different types of bonds, the two most important bonds in hair for this story are, hydrogen bonds and sulphur bonds.

In hydrogen bonding, keratin chains bind to each other indirectly through a water molecule. And although this molecule maintains the bond, it makes hydrogen bonds one of the weaker bonds.

This is because hydrogen bonds are very sensitive to heat and water.

For example, will you straighten with a straightener? Curl with a curling iron? Or waves with a curling set? Then the water molecule disappears, and you can temporarily change the hair structure.

And if your hair gets wet due to rain or high humidity, more (too many) water molecules are actually added. All the keratin chains in your hair then want to bind to these molecules. This causes your hair to contract, so to speak, resulting in frizzy hair.

In sulphur bonds, keratin chains bind directly to each other via sulphur atoms. These bridges are considerably stronger than hydrogen bonds. Weather therefore has little to no influence on them.

What does affect sulphur bonds are chemical treatments.

The most well-known of these is undoubtedly the curl perm.

Permanent liquid breaks the sulphur bridges, after which fixation (neutraliser or fixative) restores the bridges to the desired, new structure. And this structure is permanent, or permanent for the treated hair.

“New” hair coming out of your hair follicle then has your natural hair structure again.

Conclusion

Connecting a bit of practice with science here, we can draw the following conclusions:

Who is a keratin treatment suitable for?

This treatment is suitable for those who indicate that they:

But how long can I enjoy such a treatment?

If you treat your hair at home with the right products, you will have lasting pleasure from a keratin hair treatment. The treated hair will remain straight!

However, just like a colour treatment, a keratin hair treatment will also cause outgrowth. This outgrowth can be touched up once or twice a year.

Is a blonde Balayage something for me too?

Is a blonde Balayage something for me too?

Have you ever wondered if a blonde Balayage would be something for you?

We get that and here’s why a Balayage is so suitable!

Balayage is actually a French word meaning ‘sweeping,’ as in to sweep on a hair lightener to create highlights. Balayage is the technique of free-hand painting highlights onto the hair, creating a soft and natural gradation of lightness towards the ends.

The advantage of a Balayage is that your hair retains its natural colour on top and along the contours, so you have an outgrowth in the treatment right from the start. (See right photo)

As a result, your Balayage will not grow out disturbingly!

Many women therefore only have their Balayage touched up 2 or 3 times a year.

You don’t need to redo the whole treatment, just have some new foils placed at the top so that the Balayage is back a bit higher in the hair.

And because the treatment is very nicely outlined in the beginning, it will therefore not grow out ugly or streaky!

Those different colour shades give your hair a bit more depth, which also makes it look fuller.

Isn't such a treatment bad for my hair?

In combination with Olaplex, it is not a problem.

There are sulphur bridges in the hair, similar to the steps of a ladder. These sulphur bridges give the hair strength. Hairdressers who do not use Olaplex can make the hair weaker and more brittle.

We do use Olaplex, which ensures that the existing sulphur bonds are protected during the colouring process and afterwards. The Olaplex mask ensures that new sulphur bonds are created again, making weak hair, even after the colouring treatment, feel better than before!

Do I choose cool or warm?

Many women wonder whether they should choose a cool or warm Balayage. During the beauty consultation, prior to the treatment, we discuss with you what your wishes are and find out what best suits your skin type.

Please do remember that a cool Balayage requires a little more maintenance at home.
Cool pigments tend to disappear from the hair during washing and styling, which is why you need to keep replenishing the cool pigments at home with toning drops or a colour mask.
